Gestational Diabetes -- One of Three Main Types

On average, 4% which is 1 in every one hundred in the United States of pregnant women get Gestational Diabetes, & although it can be a quite serious medical condition, with the correct treatment, it absolutely will be quickly controlled. It will show up later in a pregnancy, at about week twenty-eight. If left untreated, it can cause damage to your fetus.
The base definition of diabetes is that your blood sugar level is too high for your body to process. Although we need glucose for energy, too much of it may be dangerous. Insulin doesn't cross the placenta, but sugar & all other nutrients will, causing baby to have a higher than normal blood sugar levels, forcing the baby's new pancreas to manufacture extra insulin to get rid of it. Because your baby is getting extra energy, and more than is necessary for regular growth, this extra energy is stored as fat!
This results in macrosomia, and these babies have extra issues to deal with, including damage to their shoulders during natural delivery because they are larger than average, or possibly making the mother have an emergency cesarean. A more serious problem is with breathing due to the low blood sugar levels at birth.
We are unable to know the root reason for gestational diabetes, but research has directed us to the cause -- which is thought to be associated with a severe change in the hormonal level. Hormones in the placenta assist with the baby's growth, & these same hormones will block mom's insulin from doing its job properly.
There are several ways become aware of your risk for gestational diabetes; and the 1st is your family history; or being over 25 years of age; being overweight; & if you are African American, Asia American, Hispanic or Latino, as this also puts you at risk. If you have given birth to a baby who weighs 9 pounds or more, & if you've had gestational diabetes previously, then these are added factors to make you more aware of gestational diabetes.
After giving birth, a mom's sugar level should return to what is was before becoming pregnant, & you must make note that your chance of this recurring in future pregnancies is a 2 to 3 ratio. Chage your eating habits and this will control diabetes, a dietitian will arm you with the information you need; like what to consume, and how much & when to consume certain food. Timing is an important & key factor in keeping blood glucose within a target range. Limit sweets!
A little added exercise like swimming or walking, will assist your body to utilize sugars without need for insulin injections. Always remember to check with your health care provider before starting any type of physical exercise program.
